Caernarfon Castle -- Snowdonia, Northwest Wales
Located in Snowdonia -- the highest mountain area in Wales and England -- the Caernarfon Castle was built in 1283 by King Edward I as a military stronghold and seat of government. The king's son, Edward II, was born there and made Prince of Wales. In 1969, the castle was the setting for the investiture of Prince Charles as Prince of Wales.
Inside the castle is the Royal Welch Fusilier Museum with interactive exhibits that glorify the military prowess of Wales throughout history.
Snowdonia is definitely a long drive from Cheshire but the spectacular view is worth it all.
