Conwy -- The Most Complete Walled Town and Castle in Britain
Several miles from Caernarfon Castle, one can find the best-preserved medieval town in Wales -- Conwy. Conwy was built by Edward I after his conquest of the area in 1823. The fortress took four years to build and today it is hailed as a World Heritage Site.
The town walls is reputed to be three-quarters of a mile long and guarded by no less than 21 towers.
Taking his inspiration from fortified towns in Switzerland and France, James of St. George architected Conwy. By 18th century Conwy became a trading post and river port on the route to Holyhead and Ireland.
